New Jersey Beach Portrait Sessions

It’s January, and many families schedule their beach portrait sessions early. It will be a busy year for New Jersey beach portrait sessions. Last year was certainly busy, and there was still a lot of uncertainty with the pandemic. However, people are learning how to deal with it better.

I work up and down the Jersey Shore photographing families and children who either are vacationing at the beach or live there full time. I primarily stay between the Spring Lake area and Long Beach Island and every place in-between. Since I book up all summer, I recommend that you schedule your appointment once you know when everybody will be at the beach house at the same time.

2022 New Jersey Beach Sessions are Booking Up

One of the many reasons the New Jersey beach portrait sessions will be busy is that only two appointments are booked per day. One at sunrise and one hour before sunset. At these times, the sun is soft, leaving beautiful light on the subjects’ faces. There aren’t any harsh shadows, squinty eyes, or unpleasant facial expressions because of the bright sun.

At times there are some exceptions. We can often start ninety minutes before sunset instead of the typical hour if needed. However, it’s still to start one hour before sunset since the magenta sky will often begin to pop through toward the end of the session. For instance, in Spring Lake, there are gazebos on the boardwalk, and since the beach isn’t wide, the sun casts a nice shadow where the families can be posed without the bright sun in their eyes.

Long Beach Island, since the replenishing beaches are very wide, as a result, starting earlier than the recommended time isn’t possible. The sun is too bright, and nobody looks good looking right into the sun, which happens since the sun sets over the bay in New Jersey.

Engagement Proposals

In addition to family portraits, I photograph many engagement proposals. These are a lot of fun, I’m often tucked away somewhere nearby, and as one is getting ready to propose, I start secretly snapping away. Then once the person who doesn’t know what’s going on realizes what’s happening, I appear and continue to capture the whole proposal. From there, after the couples calm down, I typically end up doing a portrait session of both of them. Often, if the client wants, I take video and throw together an excellent mp4 of stills and video set to music.
